The Hatfield Family, The Tale of The Devil
William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield was the son of Ephraim Hatfield and Nancy Vance. Devil Anse and his wife, Louvicey, live in “Bloody Mingo County, on the West Virginia side of the Tug Fork. Devil Anse had fought for the Confederacy in the American Civil War. The Hatfields were more affluent than the McCoys and were well-connected politically. Devil Anse and Louvicey had 13 children and “The Devil” had the appearance of a rough, backwoods mountain dweller. Both families were part of the first wave of pioneers to settle the Tug Valley.
